The Klack Bird (Keldion aldietus), sometimes known as the klack hawk or simply klack, is a nocturnal, meat-eating bird of prey. It is a large raptor, reaching more than .6p in length and 1.8p across the wings. It is a reddish-brown on the underparts and predominantly bright red on the head and along its top. Its name refers to the "klack" sound that its beak makes at the moment of attacking its prey.

The klack tolerates a wide variety of habitats, nesting in any location near an Elder Tree and taking its food supply from the fields the tree will nourish. It is said to be found on all continents.

Description

When standing on its hind legs the species is known to be of a height approximately waist-high to an average male Dansali. The birds have wickedly curved beaks that take on a bronze tone, and the feathers along its neck are generally streaked with the same bright gold seen in its eyes.

Ecology

Keldion aldietus are territorial birds and will not nest within range of another clan of its kind. Klack clans seem to take on generational residence in a single tree and only leave if the plant dies or if forced out by a stronger group.

Klack Birds in Folk Lore

Many people believe that the Klack Bird is a holy animal that becomes the eyes of the gods and the tree it lives in. Due to their sole habitat being in the branches of Elder Trees, many governments have deemed the bird off limits to hunters. If a loose klack feather is found it is a highly prized possession and thought to provide the wisdom of its original owner.
